Life hasn’t been easy for many of us in Laredo. Home prices and taxes are high. It’s difficult to start a
small business. About 40% of our citizens live at or below the poverty rate. The average income is minimum wage. People need access to higher wage jobs and an affordable cost of living. We deserve clean water, air and land.
My name is Vanessa Perez. I wasn’t born into a wealthy family, and I don’t owe any political favors. I’m an educator, a mother, a homeowner, and I’ve been fighting for this community for years.
When problems arose in our District, I learned how to fight them. When the Appraisal District insisted on unequal valuations of our homes, I organized against it. When local policy and oversight allowed developers to put our children at a local elementary school at risk, I stood against it. When my neighbors were experiencing the threat of losing their homes to an unjust system, I challenged it. When developers imposed a 70% assessment increase on my community, I took them on and am still fighting them in court. When I realized the Texas Property Code poses a risk to the American Dream of homeownership, I sought fairer laws for all of us in Texas.
As a volunteer, I’ve served on several committees and participated in initiatives directly impacting all of us in District 7. I’ve devoted time to educate myself and others on important issues involving traffic, trade, business, homeownership and citizen needs. I know how to take an issue, research solutions, bring people to the table, and push for change.
You work hard to provide for your family, and you deserve a government and a representative on City Council that works hard for you. It’s time we ensure a Laredo we can all afford and that our future generations deserve. I will stand up against injustice, insist on fairness and ensure our government works for all of us, so we can enjoy economic prosperity and a better quality of life.
We deserve full-time representation. That’s why I’m running for City Council District 7. This will be my full-time focus.
